Taking the grapes in stride…

I never know when we are harvesting until close to the day. Weather variations each year push the sugars in the grapes to develop at different rates, and, after all, this is farming—the ultimate cooperation between man and the universe. I make last minute pleas to friends for the use of their feet in this home tradition, and I never know who is going to show up. But, I am never disappointed in the fun! We may be taking the grapes “in stride,” but I definitely don’t take the fruit or my friends for granted. Thank you to all who participated in this year’s stomp! It’s a vintage tradition!
