Virtuous Sinfulness
PØST Gallery DTLA
Title: “Virtuous Sinfulness”
Medium: Chocolate, ganache, fondant
When asked to contribute to this art show, I reflected on my dad. He had been a professional artist and a graduate of UCLA design school, but, when I was born, he chose to ditch it in favor of a steady income, doing something more “sensible.”
I, with a UCLA BS and a CPA, set out to do the “sensible” thing. Now, decades later, I have a piece in an art show. Full damn circle.
A couple hundred people showed up and packed the “Let Me Eat Cake” show curated by artist and publisher, Kristine Schomaker. The show, an art statement about dealing with eating disorders, featured many artists and more than fifty awesome, non-edible works depicting desserts. Mine was the one piece that was completely edible, although, some
didn’t know it until I cut into it at the end of the evening.
The spinning cake was meant to humorously combine the seven deadly sins with the seven heavenly virtues, highlighting the pleasure and, sometimes, inner conflict brought on by decadent eating. I loved when members of this artsy gathering requested a slice with their favorite sin or virtue. But, by far, the coolest thing for me was my dad making it there to see it.
Thank you to artist Steven Wolkoff for getting me involved in this rewarding project. And, thank you to Kristine Schomaker for doing such a masterful job curating this fun, fanciful, yet meaningful show.
